Want to walk the Red Carpet at the JASPERs?
Drop a donation off — before the paparazzi finds you — as we continue to help our neighbors this year with a food drive contest to benefit the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.
The individual and business that brings the most food will win prizes! Let's try and snuff out last year's record of more than 900 pounds!
Collect non-perishable dry and canned items, no glass, baby food or baby formula and bring it with you to the JASPER Award dinner, where the FoodBank will be on hand.
The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, located in Neptune, serves over 270 pantries, soup kitchens and other feeding programs with over 5 million pounds of food annually. In 2009, for every dollar donated, $0.92 went directly to the fight against hunger and poverty. In 2009, 127,500 people received emergency food through pantries, soup kitchens and shelters; this is an 84% increase over the 69,340 annual recipients in Monmouth and Ocean Counties in 2005. The FoodBank served 51,000 children with emergency food in 2009, compared with "only" almost 19,000 in 2005, according to Hunger in America 2010, New Jersey and Monmouth and Ocean County Reports.
In addition to food distributon, the FoodBank has a culinary training program, a kids' cafe that delivers hot dinner for 100 at risk children, a food stamp outreach program and a community garden where the produce is donated to families in need.
